In this episode, Joe Hawley talks with Brian Selman about his athletic journey and the importance of player development for professional athletes.
Brian Selman is in his 12th year with the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball organization, now serving as the Assistant Director, Coaching and Player Development, Strategic Initiatives. In his new role, Brian will provide expertise and insight on the minor league system while leading strategic and continuous initiatives for staff education, learning, and growth.
Prior to his current position, Brian served as the Assistant Director of Minor League Operations (2018-2020), Coordinator of Minor League Operations (2015-17), Area Supervisor (Mid-Atlantic 2013-14, Four Corners 2012), Player Development Assistant (2011), and Player Development intern (2010). In 2013, Brian played a primary role as the signing scout for Chad Kuhl, selected in the ninth round from the University of Delaware.
Brian was a walk-on long snapper at the University of Alabama from 2005-09, starting his final three seasons for Coach Nick Saban including the 2009 SEC and National Championship team. While at Alabama, Selman received a Bachelor’s degree in Management and a Master’s degree in Sport Management. Brian also received a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Florida in 2017, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate from Vanderbilt University in Leadership and Learning in Organizations.
Brian was born on June 4, 1987 in Birmingham, AL, and raised in Vestavia Hills, AL. He currently resides in St. Petersburg, FL with his wife Demetria and vizsla Rudy.
